She completed a residency in Family Medicine and practiced in rural Virginia on the Delmarva Peninsula as a NHSC scholar. Dr. Schenk then completed a fellowship in Preventive Medicine at SUNY Buffalo and joined the WSUSOM faculty in 1991 in the Department of Family Medicine’s family medicine and occupational medicine residency programs and as a research scientist at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in the Division of Epidemiology. Dr. Schenk became Director of Clinical Curriculum Development for the School of Medicine in 1997. In this role, she chaired the LCME institutional self-study for the clinical education program. Dr. Schenk also provided leadership for the 2007 LCME accreditation process as Interim Associate Dean of Academic and Student Programs and member of the LCME steering committee. Dr. Schenk has been a teacher, advisor, and mentor to medical students and family medicine residents for over 18 years.

Dr. Schenk provided leadership for the faculty as interim Chair of the Department of Family Medicine in 1998 and in 2000 was appointed Chair. In 2006, the WSUSOM merged the Department of Community Medicine and the faculty of the Center for Health Effectiveness into the Department of Family Medicine and the new Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences (DFMPHS) was established with Dr. Schenk appointed as the inaugural Chair. This new department has fully developed and implemented a Masters in Public Health Program at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. In 2007, the DFMPHS received accreditation of our new WSU sponsored family medicine residency program with Crittenton Hospital Medical Center as our primary hospital partner. Dr. Schenk was also Chair of the WSU Physician Group (WSUPG) Department of Family Medicine and was elected Secretary of WSUUPG in 2007 and served two terms. She has been a lead investigator on over 15 nationally funded grants in the areas of cancer epidemiology, medical education, and research infrastructure development in Family Medicine. Dr. Schenk has published over forty original data articles in peer reviewed national/international journals.
