Tsveti Markova, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., Professor in the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official for the Wayne State University sponsored programs.

In this capacity, she provides oversight of the residency programs for compliance with institutional and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards and establishes and implements policies for improving quality of education and work environments. In this process, she actively engages different hospital partners in reaching the highest standards of medical education. The WSU SOM's Graduate Medical Education successfully achieved institutional accreditation from the ACGME for five years, the maximum number of years awarded by the nonprofit organization.

The medical education projects Dr. Markova leads are closely integrated with the changes in the health care delivery system, focusing on the principles of quality improvement and safety, new methods of health care financing, and use of technology. She was the Physician Champion for health care transformation to the Patient-Centered Medical Home model in the FM clinical sites. She also leads a hospital-wide project with Crittenton Hospital to align GME with the hospital Quality Improvement and Safety Strategies. Her scholarly interests are in the areas of medical education, learning environment and teamwork, and health care disparities. She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Markova has served in several positions for the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP), including member of the Board of Directors, Chair of the Residency Directors Committee, and Chair of the Committee on Public Health. She has been an active contributor to the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education, a regional GME Consortium.

In addition to being recognized by many teaching awards from the Department and the School of Medicine, she was the recipient of the 2008 MAFP Educator of the Year Award for her outstanding contributions to education in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education spheres. For several years, she was selected as one of the "America's Top Family Doctors" by the Consumers' Research Council of America. She was also honored with the prestigious 2011 Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, for exemplary teaching of residents and leadership of innovative and effective residency programs.
